About the Role
**Content Journalist (Crypto Tax)**
Full-time Consultant · 5+ years' experience required
Most companies that use the word 'journalist' in a job title mean 'content writer who works quickly.' This is not that role.
KoinX is the leading platform for crypto tax calculation and digital asset reporting. We serve 1.5 million users (individual investors, tax professionals, and crypto-native businesses) across 100+ countries. We are building the content infrastructure that makes KoinX the most trusted source of information in this space.
The role we are hiring for is: someone who finds real stories about crypto tax, and turns those stories into content that is as useful and interesting as it is readable. The primary output is unique content that earns coverage in the press, from a structured (real) stories database that feeds everything from standalone articles to newsletter content to product copy.
This is a journalism role that requires commercial awareness. If you have done only typical content writing, this is not the right fit. If you have done original reporting, source development, and story-led writing and want to apply those skills in a product context, keep reading.
**Why This Role Exists**
Crypto tax is not a dry compliance category. It is full of emotionally charged, genuinely surprising stories. People post on Reddit about discovering they owe $50,000 in taxes they didn't know about. Traders tweet about IRS notices for staking income they never received in cash. CPAs describe spending two weeks manually reconciling a client's DeFi transactions only to realise they'd missed an entire chain.
These are not edge cases. They are the daily reality of millions of people who participate in crypto markets without understanding the tax implications, until it is too late. That is the story bank KoinX is building.
We are building a library of real, verified, sourced stories that position KoinX as the most honest and knowledgeable voice in crypto tax, and that make every other page on the site more credible by association.
**The Primary Deliverable: The KoinX Stories Bank**
Eighty percent of this role is building and maintaining the KoinX Stories Bank: a structured database of real stories involving crypto tax: mistakes, surprises, audits, confusions, near-misses, and resolutions. Every story is sourced, verified, classified, and deployed across the site.
**What the stories bank is not**
- It is not a folder of saved Reddit posts.
- It is not a collection of case studies from satisfied KoinX customers.
- It is not AI-generated scenarios dressed up as real experiences.
**What the stories bank is**
- A structured database: every story has a Story ID, source URL, jurisdiction, audience type, topic tags, emotional tone, summary, key quote, KoinX relevance note, and deployment status.
- A primary source of raw material for the entire content programme: standalone story articles, injected snippets on tax guides and integration pages, newsletter sections, product copy, and digital PR pitches.
- A living asset that grows weekly through active sourcing across Reddit, Twitter, forums, news, and internal Intercom/support data.
- A verified resource: every story is confirmed against its source before use. Tax claims are fact-checked against primary sources (IRS.gov, HMRC, ATO, ITD).
**Story sources this journalist will actively work**
- Reddit
- Twitter/X: Advanced Search with engagement filters
- Crypto news
- Tax authority announcements and guidance (IRS, HMRC, ATO, ITD)
- Internal KoinX sources (Intercom conversations, support tickets, customer calls)
- Direct interviews with KoinX users, CPAs, and CFOs who have agreed to share their experiences
- Trustpilot, G2, and Capterra reviews of KoinX and competitors
**Full Scope of the Role**
The role requires the ability to find the human truth inside a complicated subject and render it clearly.
1. **Stories Bank and Story-led Content (80%): Source, triage, log, and enrich real stories. Write standalone story articles, both single-story pieces and themed multi-story collections. Produce 2-3 sentence story snippets for injection into existing content pages. Write product pitch paragraphs that follow the OpenView product-led storytelling framework: story establishes the pain, product resolves it.**
2. **Write story-led versions of core content types: 'Is X taxable?' guides that open with a real story before the rules; country tax guides that begin with a relevant case; integration pages that include a real-world example of what happens when the integration doesn't exist. Make the informational content alive.**
3. **Digital PR and Newsletter (20%):**
Identify stories in the bank that have press potential. Develop and pitch angles to journalists covering crypto, fintech, personal finance, and tax. Build and maintain a list of relevant journalists and editors. Write press-worthy versions of KoinX's own data or findings. Coordinate with the content team to ensure PR and site content reinforce each other.
4. Own KoinX's newsletter: Figure out content angles for the Tax Rule Update and Exchange Watch sections based on stories spotted during regular sourcing.
**What We Need**
- 5+ years of journalism, investigative reporting, or long-form content experience. Not content writing. Journalism. You have found sources, verified claims, conducted interviews, and written stories that were published under your byline.
- A nose for a story in raw material. Given a Reddit thread with 200 comments, you can identify the one response that contains a story worth writing in minutes.
- Comfort with complexity you did not already know. You did not start your career in crypto tax. You have started careers in complicated subjects before, learned them thoroughly, and produced original work from inside them.
- Ability to write in a plain, direct, human voice. No corporate-speak. No inflation. No 'game-changing insights'. The writing in your portfolio should sound like a knowledgeable person talking, not a brand.
- Verification instinct. You do not publish a claim you have not checked. For factual errors about tax law, this is not optional, it is a legal and credibility issue.
- Database and systems thinking. You can maintain a structured database without someone holding your hand. You understand that the value of a story bank comes from its tagging and classification, not just its volume.
- Commercial awareness. You understand that content must serve a business goal. You can write a product pitch that is specific enough to convert without sounding promotional.
**Strong preferences**
- Experience in personal finance, fintech, tax, or crypto journalism. You do not need to have been a crypto journalist, but you need to understand how financial products work and how financial regulations affect real people.
- Digital PR or media relations experience. You have pitched journalists, gotten coverage, and know what makes a story land versus what gets deleted in 10 seconds.
- SEO awareness. You understand how content gets found organically. You can write for humans and for search without confusing the two. You do not need to be an SEO specialist.
- Experience building or maintaining a content asset; a database, a resource library, a story archive. You have thought about content as a system, not just as individual pieces.
**One Last Thing**
This role requires a high tolerance for working in a niche.
Crypto tax is specific.
The stories are specific.
The audience is specific.
If you prefer writing about broad topics for wide audiences, this is not the right fit.
If the specificity is what attracts you, the idea of knowing one complicated subject better than almost anyone writing about it, then this is exactly right.
Before you apply, ask yourself one question:
If you had unrestricted access to Reddit, Twitter, Intercom, and a newsroom's worth of crypto tax data, then could you find five strong stories in a single afternoon, know exactly which ones are worth writing, and produce the first article by end of day?
If yes: we want to hear from you.
If you need to think about it: this is probably not the right role right now.
*Apply with a short cover note (200 words max) that names one specific public story you'd add to the KoinX stories bank, and in two sentences, tells us why it is a good story*
